on the eve of ecbcp's one month birthday, i wanted to give you all an update on the breastfeeding situation. for those of you who would rather not know about this kind of thing, please feel free to skip the rest of this post.
because of my breast reduction, you will remember that we were very uncertain as to whether or not i would be able to breastfeed. once ecbcp arrived, i was faced with reduced breasts, flat nipples, a baby who wouldn't latch, and milk that took 5 days to come in. i decided that rather than not attempt any sort of breastfeeding i would pump using a hospital-grade pump and mix the breastmilk with formula.
it went really well for the first two weeks, and i was getting about 1.5 to 2 ounces of breastmilk approximately 6 times a day. i am now, however, only getting about 0.5 to 1 ounce a day total. it is a lot of effort for little reward. so i have decided that i am going to stop pumping as of tomorrow.
i feel really glad that i was able to give ecbcp the benefits of breastmilk for at least a little while. it is more than i thought i was going to be able to do. and because more recanalization occurs with each pregnancy, if i do get pregnant again i may be able to supply our next baby with even more breastmilk.
