meal plan success!

This week Ru and I managed to follow our meal plan to the letter. We actually ate what I had planned for us to eat every single night this week. This means that in the last 7 days, we didn't get take-out or delivery once! Those of us who know us know that this is a big deal. Before Signal came along, I think we spent more money on food each month than we did on our car payment. We loved to eat out. We loved to get delivery. We loved to eat, eat, eat. And we still do, but now we are trying to do it more healthfully and less expensively. It isn't always easy, but it is worth it.

I mean really. Look at the pizza that we made for supper last night.

Ready to go into the oven.

Ready to eat!

Fresh dough, tomato sauce, bacon, pepperoni, onions, peppers and cheese. It was inexpensive. We controlled the amount of cheese and meat we put onto it to control calories. And it was delicious. Tune in tomorrow for the coming week's plans so that you know when to invite yourself over for dinner.

Good job with the meal plan! We also had homemade pizza last night, or pizzas in our case. (We made far too much in an attempt to provide for some lunches this week. Sometimes this backfires and we just end up eating far too much...) It really does save a tonne of money, and you have much more control over what you're eating, both from a nutrition standpoint and a environmentally-responsible consumer standpoint. Way to go!

I'm a huge fan of the weekly meal plan, though it often ends up lasting more than a week as sometimes we have leftovers for supper, and sometimes during the week when we have activities in the evenings there's no time for a proper supper. I also find it a nice way to try out a new cookbook, as we'll choose all the recipes for the week from a cookbook that we haven't yet thoroughly explored. This also goes well with theme weeks, which I also love, as then the leftovers compliment each other so well, and you can often use the same ingredient in several dishes. (Favourite theme weeks chez nous are Mexican, Middle Eastern, Vietnamese, Greek, and Japanese.)

Okay, this comment is getting out of hand. Clearly I enjoy this aspect of household management a little too much. (You'd never find me commenting this much on a post about cleaning or laundry.) In any case, keep up the good work and the good food!
